Retirement Variability

For those who have done an online retirement calculation, there are many things that you should understand that will affect your calculation. Some do a calculation thinking that they are on-track, yet there are many variables that can change your plan significantly. Does this mean that you should not plan? No, just understand that on some of these variables you may want to be a bit conservative to build a cushion into your plan. Also, understand that plans change. If you are working to retire at 55 or 60 in a job that you do not love, then you should look at what it will mean if you may need to work a few more years if needed. Will you be able to do this? What are your options?

  • Age 65 retirement age
  • 8% rate of return before retirement
  • 6% rate of return after retirement
  • 4% salary increase
  • 3.5% inflation
